Exposed roots of sexual assault (Written Piece)

My Mum was raped once when she was 13-years old, once when she was 20 years old, and once when she was 23 years old.

My eldest sister was raped by a relative. My next oldest sister was raped when she was 15 and once when she was 22.

I was raped by an in-law on my 16th birthday, gang-raped by 7 guys when I was 17, once by a sexual partner, and numerous times in a 9-year relationship.

My brother was raped by a well-known sports figure.
My youngest sister was raped twice.
That is EVERY MEMBER in my family.

How many went unreported? Sadly, all of them for various reasons, mainly because we were raised in a home where you were made to look “at fault” and were often punished “for telling.”

Now, I see how wrong we all were. We let these guys off scott-free.

Now, I would report but my main message is that school children need to be taught very early to tell and you won’t get in trouble. We will protect you. ANYONE who has been sexually assaulted really NEEDS to tell in order to get the help that they need to deal with the assault and to help put these people behind bars.
